Is it portuguese speaking/cultured?

I knew they were sort of in the middle of nowhere, but I had to check on a map to be sure Fiesta, so I'm not much better. They look intreguing:

Not first hand but my mother & uncle went a few years back. She said it is a beautiful place and she really loved it. She stopped on one island for a week and then moved to another for the second week. She went as part of a festival that my uncle was dancing in (morris dancer) so they were looked after by the locals the second week. But they also hired a taxi driver to take them round the island for the day to show them sights, which was very cheap. Theres also some sort of cave that you go into, really deep down underground, She showed me the photos and it looked amazing.

Has anyone been? My parents are thinking of taking us all there next year for my mum's 60th (renting a villa on Pico). I have been Googling it but just wondered if anyone had first hand experience.
