Sometimes it can be a bit of pressure from the family, but yes it does seem a bit silly. If they just wanted the party, they could have had one of those naming ceremonies and cut out the religion alltogether.

... and it really made me cringe. Both parents are quite openly athiest and quite clearly went along with the whole thing just for the after party. Leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. Why not just have the party?
