Wedding Magazine - Honeymoon Destinations

VeniceVenice is a unique blend of water, art and romance located four kilometers from terra firma and two kilometers from the Adriatic Sea. It is a treasure from the artistic, architectural  and of course romantic point of view.

The city was built on over 100 islands in a lagoon on an exceptional atmosphere during the phenomenon of "high water," when the high tide exceeds the level of dry land and floods the main streets and piazzas.

With its narrow and mysterious streets, fantastic gondolas and surprise views, Venice is the perfect place for a honeymoon because it is unique, timeless and gradually sinking into the mud! For the IT girls amongst us it is packed with fab restaurants and shopping to die for. Those intellectual types will enjoy its array of wonderful museums. With no cars or buses bustling past, it truly is a magical experience.

St Marks Square - expensive cafes and lots of pigeons as well as incredible architecture. One of the most beautiful squares in the world. Always busy but still has an air of peacfulness about it St. Marks Basilica - this is "the" place to see in Venice. The cathedral was built in the 11th century and is a treasure house of incredible relics collected over the centuries
The Campanile - this 325 foot high bell tower dominates St. Marks. The original 1100 year old building collapsed in 1802. This one was built in 1912! Take the lift to the top for incredible views of the old city and beyond. The Piazzetta - this smaller square runs from St. Marks down to the quayside. It has the twin columns of St. Theodore and St. Mark where public executions took place. Venetian superstition considers it is bad luck to walk between the two columns.
The Doge's Palace - this was the seat of government and is full of famous paintings.
The best time to visit Venice is late March to May as it has fewer crowds. For those of you having a winter honeymoon, you may find the city flooded.

Words of wisdom

The gondola trips are pricey – a 50 minute tour of the Grand Canal will cost you about £40. Some restaurants and bars refuse credit cards so make sure you have plenty of Euros when travelling about the City.

Most hotels in Venice are traditional old style with lots of character. Don't expect high rise blocks with leisure facilities! Most of the hotels are comfortable if not a little basic but there are plenty of 4 star hotels if you like your home comforts. What all the hotels offer is an unrivalled location with friendly and helpful staff. Venice hotels and restaurants are more expensive than in other Italian cities, simply because everything has to be delivered by boat. The good news is hotel prices usually include breakfast.

You can expect to find pizzas for around £4 and a three course meal for about £20. Avoid going to a restaurant for your lunchtime meal, as they will expect you to have the full three courses and it is more expensive at this time of day. Instead grab a snack for your midday break and dine in comfort at night.

Your honeymoon does not have to comprise wholly of Venice. You could do day trips to other Italian landmarks which are also full of unique flavour and interest.
