 The Dominican Republic is the most populous country in the Caribbean, and occupies the eastern two-thirds of the island of Hispaniola, which it shares with Haiti to the west. Cuba is the only larger country within the Caribbean. When Christopher Columbus saw the island on his first voyage in 1492, he couldn't stop raving about its natural beauty
, insisting "There is no more beautiful island in the world”. And he got about more than Judith Chalmers so he is not to be scoffed at.The official language is Spanish. Around the main areas where tourists are concentrated, many Dominicans also speak some English. The Dominican PESO is the national currency, though US dollars are widely used and on the whole preferable. T  he geography of the country is greatly diverse, ranging from arid semi-desert plains to luxuriant valleys of tropical rain forests. As in most of the islands of the Caribbean, there are no large wild animals, no poisonous snakes, spiders nor insects whose bite or sting is life threatening to humans (hoorah). There are some spiders whose sting can be painful but thank the lordy, these are rare.The weather remains tropical all year round, with slight variations dividing it into basically two seasons, summer (May to October) and winter (November to April). The average annual temperature is around 25° (77°F). Words of wisdom  Many honeymooners take advantage of all-inclusive hotels, which are plentiful in the Caribbean. As hard as it is to leave the lap of luxury that is your resort, anyone flying for that length of time to visit an island of culture so radically different to our own and so plentiful with History, beauty, and interest must be a complete numpty.The people of the Dominican Republic are by far the most friendly I have ever met in the Caribbean, and appear to appreciate our presence as a positive support to their national economy, rather than an opportunity for individual gain by means of pick pocketing which can be a problem in some countries with similar lack of wealth.  You can have exactly what you want in the Dominican. A restful romantic honeymoon, a culturally enlightening experience. A wild adventure, or an Olympic style menu of games and entertainment.
