The Maldive Islands stretch from the south-western tip of India all the way to the Equator. Of the 1,196 Islands, 26 distinct coral atolls are speckled over a total area of 36,00 square miles of the Indian ocean, 199 of the islands of which are inhabited. These islands have been populated and thriving as early as the 4th century BC. It is argued that the earliest settlers migrated from Arabia, eastern Africa and the Indian subcontinent among other places. The Maldives is the world's flattest country, with no natural land higher than 7.9ft above sea level. There is a fear that as sea levels rise, island countries such as the Maldives will simply be swamped and disappear.T he Maldives has the most dazzling tropical scenery, handsome coconut palms slanting on pure white beaches toward crystal-clear lagoons, coral reefs with great snorkelling and scuba diving, and the promise of sunshine, all the ingredients that make up the classic honeymoon island. Indeed it is a place where the most important decision you’ll have to make is which bit of the sand you want to lie on, or what time you plan to swim in the crystal clear turquoise water.Of course, there are lots of activities to enjoy while on the islands. With a hot tropical climate, The Maldives experience two monsoons, the southwest from May to October and the northeast from November to April. Generally the southwest brings more wind and rain in June and July. The temperature rarely falls below 77°F..Being a Muslim country, the Maldivians are extremely hospitable people. On the resort islands things are quite easy going, but on inhabited islands both men and women must cover arms chest and thighs. The travel health advice for the Maldives would be to have Courses or boosters in hepatitis A & typhoid. The Vaccines sometimes advised are diphtheria; poliomyelitis; tuberculosis; hepatitis B; rabies. A Yellow fever certificate is required if entering from an infected area, check with your GP if you are having a multi stay honeymoon that may require this.
