Honeymoon in a tentA BRIDE has enjoyed a honeymoon with a difference – after her new husband took part in a 24-hour mountain bike race the day after they got married.

Nigel Moore and Alison Bowery brought their wedding forward to Friday after his sister, Moira, was only given months to live.

They later realised Nigel had already registered to take part in a Mountain Mayhem 24-hour bike challenge in Herefordshire on the following day.

But instead of not taking part, Nigel joined in the race with members of the Newcastle-based Grimey Lymies mountain bike team.

Alison, aged 49, who works at Bentley Motors, Crewe, said: "As soon as we realised the wedding was the same weekend as the race, Nigel said he would cancel the challenge, but I said 'no'.

"We have made arrangements to go away for a proper honeymoon soon, although we haven't decided where yet.

"It was a brilliant weekend and one I will never forget."

Nigel took part in the race with Alison's son Robert, aged 24, and friends Chris and Matt Webb.

Bike ride BrideAlison said: "Nigel has been mountain biking for about 10 years and he got Robert into it. He has only been doing it for about eight months, but got fit enough for this challenge."

Nigel and Alison, who live in Biddulph, first met at a jiu-jitsu class 15 years ago, but only got together in March last year after meeting up again on social networking website Facebook

They got engaged in November and married at Newcastle Register Office on Friday.

Nigel, who works at the Co-op Pharmacy distribution centre, Meir Park, has one daughter, Ruth, aged 22, who acted as his best man.

He began his 24-hour endurance challenge at 2pm on Saturday, the day of his 47th birthday.

His team of four took it in turns to cycle an 8.8-mile lap, and completed 21 laps in the 24 hours – the winning team completed 32 laps.

Nigel said: "It was an unusual honeymoon, but Alison didn't want to cancel.

"I started it on my birthday and finished it on Father's Day, so everything was in one weekend.

"The event is hard work, but enjoyable."
