wedding newsA scout group came to the rescue of a frantic bride after her bridal carriage got stuck in the snow.

Laura Bromley from Chesington had planned the wedding of her dreams on Saturday and was due to arrive at church in a luxury Rolls-Royce.

But as the snow and ice swept across London she faced a white wedding she had not bargained on.

The Rolls-Royces were due to take her from her parents' house in Mitcham to St James's Church in New Malden for a 1pm wedding.

But when the cars got stuck in traffic for more than two hours it was the 4th Worcester Park Scout Group who raced to the rescue in their 4x4 vehicles.

Paul Green, from Worcester Park, group scout leader for the 4th Worcester Park Scout Group and a friend of the bride and groom, said: “I saw the weather coming in and told the best man to give me a shout if there were any problems.

“When the cars had been struck in traffic for two hours I sent one of our members out to pick them up in a Land Rover but then he got stuck too – so me and my wife ended up taking them ourselves in another Land Rover.

“It is not the ideal transport for a bride because it is dirty and not the most comfortable seats in the world.

“We wrapped the bride up in blankets so she didn't get cold and mucky and took her, her mum and dad and bridesmaid all the way to the church. We made it just in time at 12.55pm.

“The bride was a little stressed but quite pleased to be getting to the church.

“The Rolls-Royces did arrive in time to take them to the reception but we followed them there just in case.”

Scout 4x4, which is the brainchild of Chris Vickers from the 4th Worcester Park Scout Group, has also provided assistance during the bad weather to Surrey Police, Meals on Wheels and South East Coast Ambulance Service. Many of its members are also paramedics and care practitioners.

Mr Green said: “We never set out to be an emergency service we just wanted to help out.”
